How to Deal With An Abusive Spouse!

I always talk about what I think are the 3 Deadly Sins of Marriage – they are the Three As – Abuse, Addiction and Adultery. I call them the 3 deadly sins because they are the three areas that attack the very foundation of the relationship – trust and respect.

Abuse – whether it be physical, emotional, or verbal – is toxic in any form.  At its core, it probably stems from a lack of self-esteem, feelings of unworthiness or having been abused themselves.  Regardless of the source, living with an abusive spouse is not an acceptable way to choose to live the one chance at life that we get.

So if you are in the process of divorcing an abusive spouse or contemplating divorce, here are just few tips to guide you:

  1. Create a Safety Plan – If you are in a physically abusive relationship, pack your bags, go to the nearest shelter and get help immediately.  Also have a stash of cash if you can – you might need it to live on and for the attorney.  Just know that there are many resources for you.   You can also call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1−800−799−7233.  No relationship is worth jeopardizing your life.
  2. Set Boundaries – If you are in an emotionally or verbally abusive relationship then finding ways to control the interaction and communication with your spouse will be the key to your freedom.   This will include using forms of communication, such as email or texts, that can be documented.  If you must meet with your soon-to-be-ex, try to avoid doing it alone.
  3. Develop a support system – such as friends, family, clergy and/or therapists.  People who can help you feel strong even if you’re not feeling that way.
